Writing it forward

Updated: 21 hours ago

All I had was an old brown folder with a metal strip found in the attic of the old Cape Cod. The dates of stories found inside all tied to 1947.

By the time one particular story ,written by my Dad ,peaked the interest of the person helping me curate the collection, it had set my mind in motion as a film script. That was 2021.

After sitting with the story, animating each character , tweaking and enhancing and editing, I finally got the help of a veteran script writer and video professional.

That was October 2025.

Posting on Facebook went out seeking actors for the children's parts, the adults I polled from professional acting circles, and finally a face to face read with two teen actors.

On Tuesday December 16 , I sat across from the future of this work. Seventy eight years ago this story was typed on parchment paper and two new voices were making a new story .

They stepped in and asked " is this good motivation for my character here?" ,

" can I suggest a little side scene here?"

I changed updated and revised the story for film, and now new eyes and hands and hearts are making this story, their story. They want to communicate and relate to their world with it.

It hit me that this is what I was hungry for.

Someone else to throw their energy into what were once words on parchment paper set down 78 years ago.

The eagerness for living history comes through their fresh minds. It lends excitement to the scene by scene process.

Their eyes animating words once on paper. Their eyes dictating the direction . A future short black and white film with its own power and one I can't predict.
