Most Syracuse folks are chasing sun, dancing when temperatures reach above 36 after the long winter. Their Christmas trees are down, decorations well packed and put away and their minds already focused passed St. Patty's day. My tree is still up and decorated in my livingroom I retrofitted to shoot a movie scene.
As for me, I packed my videographer into my van on an almost frigid morning last Friday, March 6th and headed up to Fulton, NY , where there was still inches of snow on city streets to make right backdrop for my lead actor , who came in from Oswego.
Joy was on my face, even though I shivered, when we found the historical
buildings amidst a few snow drifts
that fit the scene.
I was so cold, I had to step back into the van until it was my turn to be an extra walking by.
When the scene shooting was complete ,
we stopped for a bite to eat at a little diner downtown. Simple, hot, delicious.
We were then off to Warners , New York.
There, a good friend loaned me her sprawling back yard which featured vistas of hills and a babbling brook.
We met our young actress there, and shot against a snowbank, still available at that location and recorded some sounds of that brook and various birdsong.
In between shoots, we visited the Erie Canal , noting how displeased were the many ducks who sneered at our intrusion.
Seems they too wanted to jumpstart spring, eyeing us critically as we approached for snapping a few nature photos. This was their turf!
The long day snow chasing landed us two more important scenes, leaving only one more to shoot. Just an exterior front door scene.
But alas, my partner says, we need a little snow there too! But I guess we are in Iuck, after this sunny thaw of March 10th, a cold snap is coming back. Snow hasn't given up yet.
All in all. I think I'm stuck being a sucker for snow. I was born at the end of November as it happens. But don't think for a minute, I can't ditch my winter clothes for shorts with a big smile. And my next movie will thankfully, take place all indoors.
